Social support

Scholarships provide direct social support to those students who are economically challenged and whose families cannot, on their own, afford the costs associated with university attendance.

Scholarships are co-financed by the European Social Fund and by the Portuguese Government under the Human Potential Operational Programme.

The attribution of scholarships is regulated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education that stipulates the amounts and the circumstances under which students may apply.

The regulation for scholarship allocation and the Decree-law 70/2010 of June 16 are available for viewing on the SASUM website (www.sas.uminho.pt). Application forms must be completed on previously established dates.

The decision to award a scholarship follows a careful analysis process of the information provided by the applicant in the form (and corresponding attesting documents). This analysis may be further complemented with an interview and, if the case is justified, by a home visit made by qualified professionals. Those candidates that provide false statements, due to data inaccuracy or omission, in addition to the obligation of repaying any sums received, incur administrative, disciplinary and/or criminal sanctions.
