School of Architecture
Created in 1996, the Department of Architecture, which is now designated as the School of Architecture (EAUM), was developed by different teams led by Professors Carlos Bernardo (1996-2004) and Paulo Cruz (2004-present). Today, the level of quality that it has attained allows the School of Architecture to assert itself on a scientific scene that, up until recently, was dominated by more traditional institutions anchored in the largest urban centres of the country. The transition to ‘School’, under the same regime of autonomy of the remaining teaching and research units, took place in September of 2009, enabling the School of Architecture to look at the future under a different perspective, conceiving new projects and seeking bolder horizons: the Doctoral Programme in Architecture initiated in 2010; the new courses being prepared in the fields of Plastic Arts, Design, among other projects.
The School of Architecture has approximately 330 students from the 1st and 2nd cycle of studies, 30 students from the 3rd cycle, 24 tenured professors, and the non-teaching staff is composed of four elements. It should also be noted that the building that houses the School (by F. Távora and J.B. Távora) is located on the campus of Azurém, in Guimarães. In 2012 this city will be the European Capital of Culture.

School of Sciences
Created in 1975, the School of Sciences is located on the campuses of Gualtar and Azurém, where it carries out its activities of teaching, research and interaction with society. It integrates five departments and seven research centres based on knowledge areas related to biology, geology, physics, mathematics and chemistry. The research developed, with international recognition translated into the high ratings of its centres (two classified as Excellent and four as Very Good), serves as the foundation for the 37 teaching projects of the responsibility of the School, aimed at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle of studies. The quality of the teaching and research activities undertaken by the School is ensured by a faculty comprising 98% of PhD professors.
A solid knowledge combined with a bold and innovative spirit allows the School of Sciences to fully accomplish its mission: to develop, teach and disseminate science. With an eye for the challenges of knowledge, this School conciliates basic research with the development of applications in fields as diverse as nanoscience, biochemistry or the environment.

School of Health Sciences
The School of Health Sciences (ECS) celebrated its 10th anniversary in October 2010, coinciding with the admission of 135 students and the graduation of the fourth group of medical students. 2009 graduates scored about 6% above the national average in the national examination of access to the Medical Internship, which confirms the excellence of the project developed at the School. The School of Health Sciences participates in a programme of the National Board of Medical Examiners for the international assessment of the clinical knowledge of medical students.
The Life and Health Sciences Research institute (ICVS) is the R&D unit of the School of Health Sciences, which has received the classification of Excellent by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Among the post-graduate studies, special reference goes to the conclusion of the doctoral programmes of the first two MD/PhD students with the University of Columbia and Thomas Jefferson University. The creation of the Academic Clinical Centre along with the Hospital of Braga, which is open to collaboration with other hospitals of the region, will significantly enhance the clinical research activities developed by the ECS/ICVS. The results obtained during the first decade give us the necessary confidence to face future challenges.

School of Law
Inserted in an innovative university with a strong dynamics, the School of Law has positively evolved, updating its educational provision to make it more captivating. The law degree, established in 1993, was the third public course in the country and has 29 doctorates, which is the result of a conscious policy conceived to ensure the success of the School.
Since December 2009, the School occupies a new building with all the necessary conditions (amphitheatres, hearing room, graduate study rooms and libraries, including the Salgado Zenha Library). The growth of the infra-structure is in agreement with the increase of students. At present, the School has approximately 700 students in daytime regime, 65 students in a post-working hour system and 350 students in six graduate courses. In addition to receiving students under the Erasmus programme, the School of Law is also sought by students from African countries, Brazil and Timor. Some of the faculty members collaborate with these countries.
The School publishes four journals, all with foreign collaboration. Specialised research in the areas of Human Rights, Municipal Law and European Union Law is carried out in three research centres.
As for the employability of its students, feedback allows us to conclude that they are able to find jobs because the law degree prepares them to work as lawyers, judges, notaries, consultants and in the sectors of security forces, economy or industry.

School of Psychology
The School of Psychology has positioned itself strategically in an international reference framework, in an effort to differentiate itself as an academic institution of reference, promoting Psychology as an experimental science and as a professional practice with a scientific basis.
This positioning is reflected in the departmental structure of the subunits of the School of Psychology, namely the departments of Basic Psychology and Applied Psychology. The fundamental strategic goal of these departments is to enable the management of the School’s resources and projects, in order to create balance in the teaching and research of Basic and Applied Psychology. The concept of Psychology as a basic science with strong social relevance combined with a scientifically based professional practice has implications on the way that the School’s projects are strategically managed: Teaching, Research and Interaction with the community.
