Description


The cycle of studies leading to the doctoral degree in Educational Sciences has the duration of 3 years (full-time schedule), which corresponds to 180 ECTS. This cycle of Studies is primarily aimed at the development of: systematic understanding capabilities in a scientific field of study; research competencies, skills and methods associated with a scientific field; the ability to conceive, design, adapt and perform significant research, respecting the requirements imposed by the academic standards for quality and integrity. This cycle of studies includes the development of an original and especially designed thesis for this purpose, appropriate to the knowledge branch and doctoral speciality. Although there is no mandatory curriculum component, doctoral students may be advised to do some course units, selected according to the applicant's training and research work to be developed.

The Doctorate in Educational Sciences is relevant for career development purposes in accordance with Article 54 of the Decree-Law No. 75/2010 of 23 June (Regulations governing the Early Childhood and Elementary and Secondary Education Teaching Career).

Access to higher education


Although understood as the highest degree awarded by the Academy, the Doctoral degree in Educational Sciences (Doutor) can provide access to post-doctoral studies at local or foreign universities.

Careers


The doctoral degree is a determining requirement to begin and progress in an academic career in teaching and research in higher education. Additionally, the doctoral degree is also relevant for career development purposes in other professional careers, not directly related to higher education.

The doctoral degree also qualifies its holders to perform functions related to scientific research in the chosen knowledge branch and area of specialty, as well as for other activities related to the promotion and dissemination of activities of high scientific and technical demand.

Entry requirements


Applicants for the Doctorate in Educational Sciences should meet one of the following conditions: be early childhood educators, elementary, secondary and higher education teachers, trainers, consultants, managers and evaluators of educational projects, and other professionals working within education organisations or with educational competencies; hold a master's degree in Education/Educational Sciences or related areas; hold a relevant academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognised by the Scientific Council of the Institute of Education as attesting to the capacity to perform this cycle of studies.

Recommended requirements


Recommended prerequisites relate to the autonomy of students, and preferably to the mastery of the reading, writing and speaking skills in one or more languages other than Portuguese. It is also relevant to hold a master's degree and/or professional or research practice of high merit.
