Description

Masters Program created by the Resolution SU-148/2006, November 6 credited by the Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior (A3ES), April 5 2011, registered under nº R/B-AD 159/2007 by Direção-Geral do Ensino Superior. It offers in depth study in the fields of General Linguistics and Portuguese Linguistics and targets not only the students who wish to study the Portuguese language and its varieties but also those interested in studying other languages, from a comparative perspective.

Its major goals are the following:
- develop the skills obtained at the undergraduate level in the fields of General and Portuguese Linguistics.
- promote the study of the nature of linguistic knowledge and its use;
- provide the research tools required for an adequate description of particular linguistic phenomena;
- enable autonomous research in Portuguese and comparative linguistics (theoretical or applied).

Access to higher education

It allows the candidate to procede to doctorate studies. 

Careers

By promoting the study in depth of Portuguese and General Linguistics, this program trains professionals capable of engaging in the following activities:
- teaching Portuguese as a first, second or foreign language;
- translation;
- editing;
- speech therapy;
- forensic linguistics;
- speech industries;
- designing language policies in multilingual contexts.
