30 anos de Engenharia Biológica
Biological Engineering programme at the UMinho celebrates 30 years with an activity programme throughout the year.
The commemoration activities of the 30th anniversary of the Biological Engineering programme at the University of Minho were launched on the 22nd October, at the campus of Gualtar, in Braga. To highlight the three decades, the Department of Biological Engineering (DEB) and the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB) of the EEUM prepared a set of activities, evoking the event and seeking to foster interaction between former and current students, faculty and representatives from partner institutions and industry which received programme graduates or have cooperated with the Department in several moments.

The programme includes the Biological Engineering Days, from the 23rd to the 25th November, and the Science and Technology Week, also in November. In May 2017, a Job and Entrepreneurship Fair of Biological Engineering will take place, creating an opportunity for exchanging contacts and experiences, disseminating the programme’s and its students’ quality and presenting companies/businesses created by former student along the last 30 years.

The Biological Engineering degree was the first to be created in Portugal in this knowledge area, on the 5th July 1985, through the governmental decree 420/85. The first edition started in September 1986. Currently, the programme is taught as an integrated master programme and counts on more than 1.100 graduates (bachelor and master level). Many former students are presently employed by renowned companies and public institutions, either in Portugal or abroad.

The Biological Engineering programme aims at training professionals for several industries and services, thus preparing them to be part of working areas related to biological, environmental, chemical or physical-chemical processes. As far as industry sectors, former students of Biological Engineering have been integrated in services and industries in agro-food, pharmaceutical, cellulose, chemical, waste water, safety and quality control or environmental consultancy areas.
