The European Commission (EC) approved funding for a new large scale European centre of excellence for research based in Portugal, with coordination by the University of Minho. The project will be funded by the EC (€15 million) in addition to: Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) and North, Centre, Lisbon & Tagus Valley Committees for Coordination and Development (CCDR).

€100 million is expected to be invested during the next seven years in the creation of the centre. In addition to further funding awarded in tenders and contracts earned by researchers associated with the centre. 170 applications from various European countries were presented to EC TEAMING tender, of which 31 were selected, only 10 was successful in being awarded funding from Brussels.

This initiative aims to create in Portugal a centre of excellence with research in Regenerative and Precision Medicine, with various campuses. Rui L. Reis, Vice-Rector of the University of Minho and Director of the 3B’s Research Group, will be the centre’s scientific coordinator. The Discoveries Centre will focus on multidisciplinary research, with the development of innovative methods to prevent and treat musculoskeletal, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disorders. The centre is the result of a teaming partnership between five Portuguese Universities; Minho, Porto, Aveiro, Lisbon and Nova de Lisboa, with University College London, a world leader in Health Sciences and technologies. The headquarters will be in Minho (at Avepark), with branches in Porto, Aveiro and Lisbon, with an additional support campus in central London.

Under the scope of the initiative, Rui L. Reis will attend the Spreading Excellence and Crossing the Innovation Divide Conference, taking place on November 23th in Brussels with the invitation of Carlos Moedas (EC Commissioner for Research and Innovation) and Jan Smits (Director-General for Research and Innovation). He will participating in a reception and meeting session with the coordinators of the remaining 10 proposals funded by the EC. The contracts for these projects will be signed at a public ceremony, to take place in Brussels, in February 2017.
