The University of Minho’s Excellence Grants Award Ceremony took place on May 31st, at 4.30 p.m., at the Rectorate’s Medieval Room, in Braga. 206 students were awarded grants worth a full year of tuition fees and a certificate. Among the attendants were the Rector of the University of Minho António Cunha, the presidents of UMinho’s schools and institutes, course directors and principals of local high schools.

UMinho has been awarding students from all the degrees and integrated masters with Excellence Grants, those who have achieved the best marks of the academic year, gaining 16 or more out of 20. In the last academic year, the best marks were obtained by Rodrigo Pereira (Physics Engineering, 19.82), Fábio Fontes (1st year of IT Engineering, 18.97), Inês de Oliveira (2nd year of Oriental Languages and Cultures, 19.00), Carlos Fitas (3rd year of Mathematics, 18.92), José Pedro Lopes (4th year of Industrial Electronics and Computers Engineering, 18.00), Isabel Bjorge (5th year of Biomedical Engineering, 20) and Jorge Soares (5th year of Civil Engineering, 20). The list of the grant recipients is published annually in the Academic Portal.

At the ceremony 38 UMinho students were also awarded merit grants for having a weighted average mark of 16 or more out of 20. These grants are funded out of the Ministry of Science and Education’s budget, and are worth 5 times the national minimum wage of that current year.

Before the award ceremony, the event “2Share - Talentos Alumni” took place at 3.30 p.m., under the theme “Mudam-se os tempos, mudam-se as vontades” [Times change, wills change]. Participants in this event included former UMinho alumni José Teixeira (CEO of DST Group) and Sara Braga Simões (opera singer). The discussion was moderated by Daniel Vieira da Silva (Rádio Universitária do Minho).
