The University of Minho’s Carlos Lloyd Braga Foundation (FCLB) attributed the Lloyd Braga Chair 2017 to Hans-Jörg Albrecht, director of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law, located in Freiburg, Germany.

The solemn ceremony will take place on November 9th at 10 a.m., at the main auditorium of the UMinho School of Law (EDUM), in the Gualtar campus, in Braga. The outgoing rector, António M. Cunha, will be present. Other atendees include the president of the FCLB Carlos Couto, the president of EDUM Clara Calheiros and the Criminology and Criminal Justice degree director Fernando Conde Monteiro. After the ceremony, an open lecture will be given by Hans-Jörg Albrecht, under the title “Retention of Telecommunication Traffic Data, Criminal Procedure and Crime Control”.

The current edition of the Chair came from a joint proposal of the UMinho Institute of Social Sciences and the Schools of Law and Psychology, dedicated to the field of Criminology. The programme also includes two lectures and a meeting of researchers by Friday, to underline the importance of multidisciplinary approaches concerning crime in contemporary society.

Hans-Jörg Albrecht was born in 1950 in Esslingen, Germany. He earned his degrees from the Universities of Tübingen and Freiburg, where he is a professor of Criminology and Criminal Law. He also lectures in several universities in China, in Teeran (Iran) and Lublin (Poland). He is a lifetime member of Cambridge University’s Clare Hall College and of the criminology societies of Hungary and Serbia. Hans-Jörg Albrecht also earned honourary doctorates from the universities of Pécs (Hungary), Grigol Robakidze and Technical Tbilisi (both in Georgia) and Ulan Bator (Mongolia). The Chinese government’s Information Research Centre of International Talent honoured him with the 2016 China’s International Professor Award, and the Academic Honour Award of the 3rd Crime and Punishment Istambul Cinema Festival (in Turkey) for his contribution to the field.

About the Lloyd Braga Chair

The Lloyd Braga chair pays hommage to the FCLB’s patron and UMinho’s first rector, by praising his cultural, academic and civic versatile profile. The Chair is attributed every year to a national or international public figure, suggested by the UMinho’s Schools and Institutes or by its research centres, being framed in a scientific and cultural programme of activities. This is the 16th edition of the Chair. Since 2002, it has been attributed to individuals such as Dan Urry, Richard Watson, Denis McQuail, Marshall Stoneham, Ludo Kleitjens, Cândido Varela de Freitas, Joseph Gonnella, Ives Gandra Martins, Michael Myers, Laura Cavalcante Padilha, Martha Elizabeth Shenton, Richard Blundell, Anne & Jean Philippe Vassal, Karen Luker, Aaron Williamon, and now to Hans-Jörg Albrecht.
