Sandra Paiva takes office as Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation

Professor Sandra Paiva took office on 18 February 2025 as Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at the University of Minho, replacing Professor Eugénio Campos Ferreira.

Sandra Paiva was born in Porto, in 1973. She has a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Porto, a Master's in Molecular Genetics from the University of Minho (UMinho), and a PhD in Science from UMinho, in collaboration with the universities of Paris, Madrid and Amsterdam. At UMinho, she is an associate professor in the Department of Biology, a researcher at the Centre for Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA), and she is vice president of TecMinho. She has been pro-rector for Scientific Projects and Research Management from November 2021 to date and has also been vice-president of the School of Sciences, a member of the General Council, director of various courses, and a board member of the Houses of Knowledge Network, amongst other positions.

She was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in the USA, under the Fulbright and FLAD programmes. Sandra Paiva was a member of a European advanced training network, ITN, and bi-annually organises an international advanced course for graduate students. Furthermore, she has coordinated various research projects, spoken at international congresses, published in leading scientific journals and co-organised events to promote science, such as the European Researchers' Night and the Science Festival. She received the American Club Annual Award in 2001.
