Aníbal Augusto Alves was born on 10 June 1940 in Pinhal do Norte, Carrazeda de Ansiães. He is Professor Emeritus and retired Full Professor of Communication Sciences of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho, where he started his career as a Teaching Assistant in 1976. He was a teacher in private secondary education in the Portuguese group (1965-68).
He holds a bachelor's degree in Philosophy (Braga, 1965) and one in Social Communication (Leuven, 1972), in addition to a doctoral degree in Social Communication (Leuven, 1983).
He belongs to the Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS) and is also a member of the scientific committee of the
Comunicação e Sociedade journal.
He has held several academic management and scientific coordination positions, such as: President of the Institute of Social Sciences and Vice-Rector; President of the Pedagogical Council of the University, Director of the Historical and Social Sciences Research Centre, and Director of the Social Communication Degree Programme.
He is furthermore the President of the Portuguese Association of Communication Sciences (SOPCOM) and Member of the Opinion Board of
Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (Portuguese Radio and Television).
