Carla Martins was born at Porto in 1971.

Carla Martins graduated in Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto in 1994, with the final grade of 16 (out of 20). She completed the Master's in Research Methods in Psychology in 1996 at the University of Reading (UK). That year Carla Martins entered the University of Minho as Monitor at the Department of Psychology of the Institute of Education and Psychology, becoming Assistant in April 1997. In 2003, Carla Martins completed her PhD in Psychology at the University of Reading.

Carla Martins has been a Assistant Professor at the School of Psychology of the University of Minho since 2003 and a researcher at the Research Unit in Development and Psychopathology of the Center for Research in Psychology (CIPsi).

To date, Carla Martins has coordinated or participated in 14 funded scientific projects. She is the author of 1 book and author / coauthor of 5 book chapters and more than 40 scientific articles indexed in the SCOPUS / ISI web of knowledge databases. She has supervised / co-supervised 8 doctoral dissertations and 35 master's dissertations.

Carla Martins was Vice-president of the School of Psychology, president of the Pedagogical Council and director of the Integrated Masters in Psychology between January 2013 and September 2014 and President of the Confucius Institute of the University of Minho.​ In September 2014 she joined the Rectoral team as Pro-Rector for the Internationalization of Education. She has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Compostela Group of Universities since September 2015.

In 2012, Carla martins received the Teaching Award from the School of Psychology.​
