​​​​She was born in Fafe, in 1960.
She graduated in Physical Sciences Teaching, by the University of Minho, in 1983; completed the MA in Science Education, at the University of London, Institute of Education, in 1986; was awarded her PhD in Science Education in 1994; and obtained the Aggregation in Science Education, in 2003.
She is Full Professor of the Institute of Education, University of Minho, since 2004, and researcher of the Research Centre on Education.

She was a member of the General Council, the Senate, the Academic Council, and the Ethics Commission o fthe University of Minho; Vice-President of an Institute, Director of Department, President of a Pedagogic Council, and Director of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. She coordinated the design and implementation of the masters on teaching (initial teacher education) and engaged into the design and implementation of online courses. Besides, she has developed some in-service courses targeted mainly to science teachers.
She has coordinated the “Online Teaching and Learning & Professional Development of Teachers in the Republic of the Maldives” funded by UNICEF-Maldivas. By invitation of FCG, she coordinates the Project of Basic Education Curriculum Reform of Guiné-Bissau, funded by FCG, and by UNICEF and World Bank.
She was Director of the Research Centre on Education and coordinated a research group as well as externally funded projects. Her research interests focus on Science Education for Sustainability, including teacher education and teaching resources.

She was a member of the installing commission of the Portuguese Association for Science Education (APEduC. Nowadays, she is the President of the General Assembly of APEduC, a member of the Physics, Chemistry and Educational Sciences and a member of the Association for Teacher Education in Europe.​
