Born in Silves in 1954, she lives in Braga. Holder of a degree in History from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon since 1977, she has a PhD in History, specializing in Prehistory and Ancient History, from the University of Minho since 1987, and obtained her Habilitation from the University of Minho in the same field in 1994.
 
A teacher at the University of Minho since 1979, the same Institution housing her entire academic career, she was hired by the History Department as an Assistant Professor in 1987, as an Associate Professor in 1989 and as a Full Professor in 1997. Until 1998 she taught Ancient History and, since then, has been teaching Archaeology and Heritage courses across different study cycles.
 
She began her research activity at the University of Minho in the proto-historic and Roman settlement area, and since 1988 has been the supervisor for the scientific management of Urban Archaeology in the city of Braga, as well as for the Study and Rescue Project of Bracara Augusta, in which she has been responsible for around a hundred archaeological interventions. Her research themes mainly focus on Roman and Late Ancient Urbanism and Architecture, Archaeological Heritage and its impact upon contemporary societies, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) applied to Archaeology. The coordinator of 15 competitive projects, 10 of which had an international scope, she organized up to 40 international scientific events and currently integrates several international research networks.
