​​​​​Ricardo J. Machado was born in Porto, Portugal, in 1971. DEng degree in Electronics and Computer Engineering from the University of Porto [1994], MSc degree [1996] and PhD degree [2001] in Informatics/Computer Engineering from the University of Minho (UMinho). Dr Habil title in Information Systems and Technology from the University of Minho [2013]. Certified as Software Product Manager by the ISPMA International Software Product Management Association [2015]. Attended the Program of Cyber Security and Crisis Management in Cyberspace at the IDN Portuguese National Defense Institute (former Portuguese Institute for High Studies of National Defense) [2017].

R&D Engineer at Texas Instruments - Samsung Electronics Portugal [1994-96]. Faculty member of the School of Engineering of UMinho [since 1996]: founding member of the Department of Information Systems [since 1999]; Full Professor of Information Systems Engineering and Technology [since 2014].

Conducts research activities in the field of Information Systems Engineering, with a special interest in "modelling and requirements for systems analysis and design" and in "process and project management life-cycles", resulting in four industrial patents and more than 150 ISI/Scopus publications. Scientific supervisor of more than 50 PhD and MSc theses in those fields. Member of juries of more than 100 theses (MSc, PhD, and Habilitation) and specialist titles defended in universities and polytechnics. Coordinator (PI) and senior researcher of over 50 R&D projects formally approved and funded by FCT, Adi/ANI, IAPMEI, and EU.

Founder and Chair of the Steering Committee of the MOMPES International Workshops on Model-Based Methodologies for Pervasive and Embedded Software - IEEE/Springer. Founder and member of the Steering Committee of the SEDES Doctoral Student Symposium on Software Engineering, involving the Portuguese Universities with doctoral activity in the Software Engineering domain. Member of the Steering Committee of the da ICSOB International Conferences on Software Business - Springer. Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Information Systems of the SBC Brazilian Computer Society.

In 2009, he received the IEEE MGA Achievement Award. In 2015, Springer nominated his book on "Requirements in Engineering Projects" for the 2016 TAA Textbook Award. In 2016, his coordinated iFlow project received the 2016 APLOG Annual Logistics Excellence Award.
