Rui Reis was born in Porto in 1967. He obtained his first degree in Metallurgical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP, 1990) and proceeded for a Master degree in Materials Engineering (FEUP, 1994). He got both his PhD (1999) and his DSc. (2007) in Polymer Engineering at University of Minho. He is a Full Professor at the Dept. of Polymer Eng. and at the 3B´s Research Group since 2011.

He is one of the very few Portuguese researchers that has been award an Advanced Grant (AdG) by the European Research Council (2013-2018). He coordinated in the recent past or is presently coordinating more than 100 research projects, including more than 25 large EU funded projects, cross-boarder INTERREG (POCTEP) or Euro-Atlantic projects, as well as several projects from QREN, Portugal/North 2020 and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). In Horizon 2020 he is presently coordinating 1 TEAMING, 2 TWINNIGS and 1 ERA-Chairs. He is also responsible for a very large project in the Portuguese Road-map of strategic research infrastructures, 1 integrated project, 1 PhD program, several projects of North 2020, ERA-Net and FCT, being PI at UMinho of several other. He is the PI of projects with a funding of more than 45 MEuros.

He has also been responsible for several projects in collaboration, or directly funded, with/by large international biomedical companies. He was from 2003 to 2009 the Director for research on new cork applications at the Holding Corticeira Amorim SGPS. He co-founded to 2 spin-off companies based on technologies developed at the 3B´s Research Group and has been or still is President and Chief Scientific Officer of both of them.

He was the founder (1999), being since then the Director, of the 3B´s Research Group – Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics of UMinho, being also the Director/President of the Associated Laboratory ICVS/3B´s since its creation in 2011. He is the CEO of the European Institute of Excellence on Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine with headquarters at AvePark. He was the Vice-Rector for Research of UMinho from 2013 to 2017. He is also the main responsible for The Discoveries Center for Regenerative and Precision Medicine, to be installed in AvePark, in collaboration with the University College London (UCL), UPorto, UAveiro, ULisbon and UNOVA Lisbon.

Rui L. Reis is presently (2016-2018) the Global (World) President of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS), the largest international society on his field of research with members from more than 90 countries. He has been in Board of Directors of other International Societies. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Wiley, which he founded in 2007. He has edited several books (+10) of international circulation and special issues of scientific journals. He has also organized many scientific meetings and symposia, including several large international congresses. He is a member of the Editorial board of a range of scientific journals and is a reviewer for more than 150 different journals.

Rui L. Reis has been awarded more than 20 prestigious international scientific awards, as well as some innovation and entrepreneurship prizes. It is specially worthy to mention an Honoris Causa degree in medicine by the prestigious University of Granada in Spain, the condecoration by the Portuguese President of the Republic, the 2 major awards by the European Society for Biomaterials, Jean Leray and George Winter, the Clemson Award for contributions to the literature by the US Society for Biomaterials, the TERMIS-EU contributions to the literature Award, the International UNESCO Life Sciences Award, the AF Harvey Award by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) e and the nomination as a member of the National Academy of Engineering (USA).

Rui L. Reis is an author of 1010 publications listed in the ISI WoK, of which 860 are full papers published in international scientific journals (including around 70 review papers or editorials), more than 230 international book chapters, 45 patents, and more than 1850 communications to international meetings, including around  270 invited plenary or keynote talks, presented all over the World. His work has been cited around 25000 times in ISI WoK (37700 in Google Scholar), giving raise to an h index of 79 in ISI WoK (96 in Google Scholar and 82 in Scopus).
