He was the Rector of the University of Minho.

From March 2002, he has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the INI/GraphicsNet Foundation.

From June 2001 to October 2002, he was a member of the Advisory Council of IditeMinho.

Since 1996, he has been a Full Professor of the Disciplinary Group of System and Industrial Processes Engineering, with the Department of Production and Systems of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho. In 1996, he was the Director of the Department of Production and Systems.

Between 1995 and 1996, he was the Dean of the School of Engineering.

From its inception in 1993, to the period of reformulation of these groups, he was the manager of the Disciplinary Group of Optimisation and Operational Research of the Department of Production Engineering.

He is a founding member of APDIO (Portuguese Association of Operational Research). He was also the Vice-President of this association for two terms (1988/90 and 1990/92) and President of the Audit Council.

He was the coordinator of the Field of Production and Systems of the University of Minho. Since 1980, he has also been the manager for the Research Line of Technics and Models of Operational Research and Production Planning, with the Systems Science and Engineering Centre (INIC/UM).

He earned a PhD in Production Engineering, from the University of Birmingham.

He achieved a Master of Science in Operational Research from the University of Birmingham, in England.

He began her academic career at the University of Lourenço Marques in 1973, lecturing at the University of Minho since 1975. His scientific and pedagogical activity has focused on the fields of Operational Research and Simulation. Within these fields, he has supervised master's and PhD's programmes.

He graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lourenço Marques.

He was the coordinator of the Thematic Commission of Production and Industrial Management, during the first cycle of the assessment of FUP. He was also the President of the External Assessment Commission (second cycle of assessment) of the undergraduate degrees of the Engineering and Industrial Management grouping.
