Born in Barcelos in 1972. He has lived in Guimarães since 1995.
He graduated in Production Engineering from the University of Minho in 1996.
He holds a PhD in Production and Systems Engineering from the University of Minho (2002), where he also completed his habilitation in 2011.
He joined the University of Minho as a teaching assistant in 1995 and has been a full professor at the School of Engineering since 2013, in the field of Industrial and Technology Management.
His work has focused on Ergonomics, Human Factors and Occupational Safety and Health. He has taught more than twenty course units across over thirty programmes at the University of Minho, covering all three cycles of study, and has served as a visiting professor at several national and international universities. He has published around two hundred articles in scientific journals and is coauthor or editor of more than fifty books. He has coordinated or taken part in more than fifty research projects funded by national and international programmes. He is an associate editor of the journal Safety Science and a reviewer for several international scientific journals. In 2023, he joined the committee responsible for the Green Paper on the Future of Occupational Safety and Health.
He carried out research activities at globally renowned institutions: TU Delft (2010), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2014 and 2017) and Harvard University (2014 and 2017), supported by FCT, FLAD and the MIT Portugal Programme.
He has held important roles in national and international scientific assessment bodies, collaborating with FCT, A3ES, the European Commission, NASA and evaluation agencies in Brazil, Poland, Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, Ireland and others.
As an invited speaker, he has delivered more than one hundred lectures in various countries across Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia, and has received awards in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Spain, the United States and Turkey.
He was vice-president and founding member of the Portuguese Society for Occupational Safety and Hygiene between 2004 and 2024 and has been a senior member of the Portuguese Engineers Professional Association for more than twenty-five years.

Director of the master's programme in Human Engineering (2008–2017), director of the doctoral programmes in Industrial and Systems Engineering (2017–2019) and Leaders for Technological Industries (2015–2016).
He served as President of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho for two consecutive terms, from 2019 to 2025.
Between 2016 and 2025, he was the National Director of the MIT Portugal Programme, one of the leading strategic international cooperation partnerships in science and technology.
From 2022 to 2024, he chaired the Consortium of the Portuguese Engineering Schools.
