Description

The Undergraduate Degree Course in Chemistry provides students with a solid, broad-based preparation within the structure of the Bologna Declaration, and permits recognition and mobility within the european higher education network.
The innovative structure of the study program includes three distinct choices: a broad chemical science degree or a more specific preparation in plastic materials or textile materials.
The structure of the Chemical Science option is based on the recommendations of the reference document "Eurobachelor in Chemistry". In the third year of the course students may choose from a range of optional and semi-optional curricular units.
In the sub-specialisations in plastic materials or textile materials curricular units cover topics in Science and Technology of Textile and Polymer materials.
The individual project, included in the second semester of the third year, may take place in an academic or industrial environment, depending on the course sub-specialisation, the student's personal preference and his/her intention to continue studies in a second cycle.

Access to higher education

The scientific training given by the Chemistry course enables graduates in pursuing studies in a wide variety of courses of 2nd cycle (Master), in the University of Minho or another national or international institution of higher education, in order to obtain new knowledge and more specific and advanced skills in areas of their preference, completing their initial training.

Careers

The scientific training acquired by graduates in chemistry allows access to a wide range of occupations in industry and services, including:
- chemical industry with a component of chemical synthesis, such as agrochemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, polymers, paints, dyes and detergents.
- Food processing, textiles, plastics, cellulose, cork, wood and leather.
- Water industry.
- Companies of treatment and recovery of waste.
- Laboratories of chemical analyses of industries and the state.
- Corporate marketing of chemicals, raw materials and material scientific or technical.
- Business consulting.
- Scientific research institutions.
In addition to cognitive skills and problem solving in the traditional fields of chemistry, students acquire the ability to apply knowledge to solve problems not directly related to their field of study. They are also prepared to integrate multidisciplinary technical teams, as independent practitioners within their specialty in different technological environments, industrial or educational purposes.
