UMinho to host Advanced Computing Center and AIR Center Data Intelligence Network A memorandum of understanding for the installation of the Minho Advanced Computing Center (MAAC) and the AIR Center Data Intelligence Network will be signed on November 25th, at the University of Minho. The ceremony will take place between 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m., at the General Library’s lounge area, in the university’s Gualtar campus, in Braga. This protocol brings together UMinho, FCT and the University of Texas at Austin.

The outgoing UMinho rector António M. Cunha and the recently elected rector Rui Vieira de Castro will lead the welcome session and a presentation about MAAC. The president of the FCT, Paulo Ferrão, will also be attending the event. After this, keynote speakers such as Ramiro Neves (Instituto Superior Técnico), Tiago Rebelo (CEiia) and António Onofre (UMinho) will present examples concerning the use of MAAC. The signing of the memorandum is expected to take place at 11.50 a.m. by Paulo Ferrão e António M. Cunha. At noon, Manuel Heitor, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education and Fernando Feire de Sousa, the President of the Norte Portugal Regional Coordination and Development Commission, will outline the national and regional perspectives concerning this project.

The AIR Center - Azores International Research Center - is a new organisation led by Portugal with the goal of creating a new network of institutions devoted to science, technology and innovation. This network will promote an integrating approach of knowledge concerning the Earth’s observation, climate change, deep sea and data analysis. The memorandum for the installation of the AIR Center’s headquartes in Azores was formalised this past Monday in the Brazilian city of Florianópolis. Manuel Heitor, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, António M. Cunha, the outgoing UMinho rector and ministers and other representatives from the organisation’s founding countries (such as Angola, Argentina, Cape Verde, Colombia, USA, Spain, India and Nigeria) were present at this ceremony. As a part of this project, UMinho will host the MAAC and the AIR Center Data Intelligence Network.
