Description


The Master in Sustainability of the Built Environment is an international master's degree, whose language of teaching / learning is English. The student must have good knowledge of written and spoken English and must prove that he/she has this knowledge in order to be accepted.
The main focus of this master course is to provide a specialized education that develops in the students the ability to contribute to the implementation of sustainability in the built environment.
The specific objectives of the course are:
- To creat highly qualified professionals in sustainable construction who can carry out their professional activity in all countries of the world;
- Provide students with the means for them to develop their skills and deepen their knowledge in sustainable construction;
The Master's Program in Sustainability of the Built Environment is divided into three semesters (30 ECTS in each semester), totalling 90 ECTS.
The first two semesters are dedicated to the curricular component and the third semester is devoted to the preparation of the master's dissertation.
The student, after being enrolled at University of Minho, can attend one or two semesters at one of the partner institutions that have a collaboration agreement with the Master in Sustainability of the Built Environment.

Key learning outcomes


1. Expert knowledge in the area of the sustainability of the built environment;
2. Ability to work in a team, self-management, to develop individual and professional work within the topic of sustainable construction;
3. Acquirement of the following academic values: research, critical thinking, divergent thinking, integrity, evidence-based thinking;
4. Understanding, interpretation and synthesis of information from primary and secondary sources;
5. Integration of different perspectives in transforming a problem into a research topic;
6. Ability to plan and implement interdisciplinary research projects;
7. Ability to solve problems in new and unfamiliar environments;
8. Ability to apply, produce and evaluate scientific knowledge in the field of sustainable construction.

Access to higher education


This MSc course provides the technical and scientific ability to access 3rd cycle courses (PhD) in the same scientific area or in other areas. For example, the Doctoral Program in Sustainable Built Environment.

- Perform technical functions in the areas of Sustainability of the Environment Built in construction companies;
- Perform technical functions in the areas of Sustainability of the Environment Built in municipalities;
- Perform technical functions in the areas of Sustainability of the Environment Built in architectural and engineering design offices.

Entry requirements


The admission requirement for students wishing to enrol in the Master Course is a degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture or equivalent qualifications.
Students from non-English speaking countries are required to have a recognized language proficiency certificate.
