Description
The main objectives of this cycle of studies are to provide students with the necessary skills for the professional practice according to the training acquired and, simultaneously, to prepare them for the second cycle, namely, the one offered by the University of Minho in the Master in Civil Engineering. Thus, the training obtained in the Civil Engineering Degree will allow the graduates to use the knowledge acquired in basic sciences, engineering sciences and civil engineering sciences for solving problems in Civil Engineering and Construction. In pursuing these objectives, the programme of studies for this degree adopts an innovative approach, by using digital teaching-learning tools and the introduction of transversal skills, as a fundamental feature of training in these areas of knowledge.
Key learning outcomes
1. To adopt techniques for analysing the problems of civil engineering and construction, and to develop appropriate methodologies for addressing them;
2. To integrate work teams and to adequately communicate the results achieved;
3. To develop projects, perform material and component tests and to analyse and understand experimental data, compatible with this level of training;
4. To find and implement solutions that satisfy the needs of employers and the requirements of customers, within the limits of technical and economic reasonableness and ethical, environmental and social responsibility principles;
5. To know how to use digital tools applicable to multiple problems in civil engineering and construction;
6. To have transversal skills relevant to professional performance and for more advanced studies, namely, teamwork, leadership, communication techniques and ethics.
Careers
The course provides a wide range of professional opportunities, arising from the numerous skills acquired and recognized to graduates by Professional Orders for the exercise of Civil Engineering acts.
Thus, the recognition granted by the Professional Orders to graduates is taken for granted, according to the level of qualification obtained in this cycle of studies, and the provisions of Regulation No. 420/2015, Laws No. 41/ 2015 and No. 31/2009, which identify a very significant number of job opportunities. For example, graduates can design, produce, manage and maintain civil engineering works, produce construction materials, and participate in consultants or territory planning teams.
