The symposium takes place on February 16th, with the president of FCT, the MIT Portugal Program director and the former vice-president of NASA
The Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education Manuel Heitor will be present at the symposium “MIT and Portugal in the challenges for the Planet and the Society”, due to take place on the 16th of February, at the University of Minho, in Guimarães. This initiative follows the signing of a cooperation agreement between the FCT (Science and Technology Foundation) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), extending the MIT Portugal Program onto the third stage since its inception.

The symposium begins at 9.15 a.m. at the 0.20 auditorium of the UMinho’s School of Engineering, in the Azurém campus. The full professor António Cunha will deliver a speech focused on the past ten years of this partnership, with a forecast for the new stage of the Program. After the speech, the debate “Space, Sea, Climate & Data Science: Contribution to Atlantic International Research Center” will take place, led by Dava Newman, former vice-president of NASA and lecturer of Aeronautics/Astronautics and Engineering Systems at the MIT. At 11.30 a.m., Stefanie Mueller will deliver the lecture “Interacting with Personal Fabrication Machines”. Mueller is one of the 30 most influential young scientists, according to the Forbes magazine.

The debates will continue during the afternoon with the MIT researcher John Fernandez, who will focus on sustainable cities. After 4 p.m., other speeches will take place, namely by the director of the MIT-Portugal Program and UMinho full professor Pedro Arezes, by the UMinho rector Rui Vieira de Castro and by Paulo Ferrão, the president of FCT. The event also includes keynote speakers from the universities of Lisbon, Nova Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and from the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, as well as from the Lisbon Municipality and businesses such as Bosch Car Multimedia, Efacec, Tekever, Edisoft and DSTelecom.

Over 20 businesses created by professors and students who took part in the Program

This Program is the result of a partnership between several higher education institutions, the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities, the MIT, the FCT and various leading businesses. The MIT-Portugal Program was created in 2006 with the goal of strengthening Portugal’s knowledge base, its science-based entrepreneurship and the country’s international competitiveness through people-based strategic investments, knowledge and innovative ideas. Under the scope of the Program, about 1100 students joined Portuguese universities, not to mention that both professors and students have created over 20 businesses. Various projects have been funded in partnership with industries, with a focus on sustainable development.
