FCT R&D Units

The UMinho research system comprises 31 research units, which are distributed across all the organic units of the University. Currently, 87% of the research units are classified by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) as Excellent (8) and Very Good (19), which host around 91% of the Institution's researchers.

  • ARISE - Advanced Production and Intelligent Systems, with the participation of the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE);
  • AR-NET - Aquatic Research Infrastructure Network, with the participation of the Centre of Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA);
  • ICVS/3Bs, exclusively made up of R&D Units from the University of Minho: Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) and the Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics Research Group (3B's);
  • IN2PAST - Associate Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory, with the participation of the Landscape, Heritage and Territory Laboratory (Lab2PT) and the Centre in Anthropology Research Network (CRIA);
  • INESC-TEC, through High Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab);
  • LABBELS - Associate Laboratory in Biotechnology, Bioengineering and Electromechanical Systems, composed exclusively of UMinho R&D units: the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB) and the Electromechanical Microsystems Research Unit (CMEMS);
  • LaPMET - Physics Laboratory for Emerging Materials and Technologies, with the participation of the Physics Centre (CFUM);
  • LASI - Associate Laboratory for Intelligent Systems, based at UMinho, involving the ALGORITMI Research Centre and the Polymers and Composites Institute (IPC);
  • LIP - Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics Laboratory, through LIP – MINHO.
