Open Access to Publications

logo_openaccess.jpgOpen Access to scientific literature is one of the key foundations and components of Open Science. Open Access refers to the availability of scientific or academic literature without any access barriers and, ideally, with few or no restrictions on reuse (beyond proper attribution). Open Access can be achieved through journals and repositories.

The University of Minho was one of the pioneering institutions worldwide in Open Access. In November 2003, it established its institutional repository - RepositóriUM - defining its first self-archiving policy for scientific output, which came into effect in January 2005. The University of Minho's Self-Archiving Policy for Scientific Output was later updated in 2011, through Order RT-98/2010.

The RepositóriUM has contributed to increasing the global visibility of the University's research and the digital dissemination of its members' scientific output, currently hosting over 90 thousand documents, which have been downloaded more than 35 million times.

In December 2018, the University established UMinho Editora, which follows Open Science principles by hosting and publishing Open Access journals from the University, and by publishing books that, with some exceptions, provide digital versions in Open Access..
