Description
The Degree in Geography and Planning has as main objective the acquisition of skills for the analysis and interpretation of the complex relationships between Man and the physical and human environment, especially in the domains of land use planning, planning and management. During the Degree, the skills and competences of integration and synthesis necessary to understand the factors and processes that determine the natural, social, economic and cultural dynamics, expressed in the uses and occupation of space, are developed, and emphasis is given to technological tools ( Geographic Information Systems) to support analysis and decision making.
Key learning outcomes
1. Acquire a solid set of general theoretical knowledge and ability to understand the scientific area of ??Geography;
2. Acquire integrated knowledge of the theoretical and methodological body of reference, of the principles, strategies and recommended measures, of the processes and actors involved, in the national and international contexts, in the scope of planning, ordering and territorial management;
3. Introduction to the main methods and techniques of the various scientific branches of Physical Geography and Human Geography, as well as the scientific areas that complement the basic training of LGP;
4. Consolidate spatial analysis skills based on a systemic approach to territorial dynamics, with emphasis on technological tools (Geographic Information Systems) to support analysis and decision making;
5. Critical reflection on current spatial transformations, using case studies and the organization of thematic study visits.
6. Apply the acquired knowledge and develop the ability to understand phenomena, in a professional approach, with students being encouraged to collaborate in scientific projects and interaction with society;
7. Develop the ability to solve problems within the scope of their training area and to build and justify their own arguments, thus allowing lifelong learning with a high degree of autonomy;
8. Develop skills that allow communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions, both to audiences made up of specialists and non-specialists, with students being encouraged to participate in scientific and cultural events and to publish their work.

This course provides the technical-scientific capacity to access courses in the second cycle (Master's) and third cycle (PhD).

The Degree in Geography and Planning from the University of Minho is qualified to perform higher technical functions at different levels of central, regional and local administration, as well as as a technical staff at a business level, whenever the necessary functions fall within the following domains:
