Description

The main objective of the Course is the deepening of the knowledge and the communicative capacity of a graduate student, in its linguistic and socio-cultural aspects. It primarily focuses on the linguistic development of the students' working languages ??(Portuguese and Chinese) in a native environment, as the first year of each variant is spent in Portugal, in the case of Chinese students, and in China, at least for a period of one academic semester, in the case of Portuguese students, thus promoting experiences parallel to their curricular plan. With regard to the training provided in the second year of the Course, it offers a set of theoretical-practical CU that allows them to explore the topics covered, in a spirit of sharing bilingual and intercultural points of view, as priority is given to students working in mixed pairs and groups. The course aims to provide its students with a keen sensitivity for the management of cultural conflict situations, as well as to develop their ability to work in areas associated with the linguistic domain, be it in translation and entrepreneurship activities, or in the educational area, enabling a range of opportunities and preparation for discovering one’s vocation. At the same time, it seeks to respond to the demand for versatility in the multiple job markets.

Key learning outcomes

1. To prepare master's students for the demanding labour market that, in one way or another, are related to the areas and cultures of the Course;
2. To develop linguistic competence, communication skills and cultural sensitivity of the Master's students in order to allow them to have an effective interaction, directed to the economic, cultural, educational, or other agents, of both markets, in establishing bridges between the two societies;
3. Provide the Master's students with a set of tools, knowledge and sensitivities in order to enrich them with an adequate contextualized communicative capacity and linguistic specialization, according to the communicational situations that can be expected to arise over a continued professional life, and, above all, provide students with the indispensable cultural sensitivity for contact with these societies and markets;
4. Understanding and ability to act in terms of teaching Chinese to Portuguese language students and Portuguese to Chinese;
5. Execution of tasks at the translation level from Chinese to Portuguese and from Portuguese to Chinese, at a first level of technical and commercial texts, and, perhaps, at a future level of literary text;
6. Involvement in situations of business exchange in an intercultural context, with what this means in terms of understanding the historical and idiosyncratic behavioural sensibilities of the two cultures in presence.
