Description


The PhD in Fashion Design is a course in partnership between the University of Minho and the University of Beira Interior, and also involves the collaboration of professors from other Portuguese higher education institutions, such as FAULisboa and ESART. The PhD in Fashion Design aims to: 
contribute to the high-level training in fashion design in a knowledge-based society;
promote progress in professional activity in academic and/or business contexts;
promote a multidisciplinary teaching and learning approach, involving scientific areas associated with fashion design such as culture, marketing, technology, and other related disciplines;
develop fundamental and applied research in fashion design, in a multidisciplinary scope, within projects integrated into the Research Units associated with the course;
promote internationalization and/or connection with the community through partnerships with other academic and/or business institutions, nationally or internationally, in order to enhance and disseminate scientific knowledge.
Thus, the course aims to train a new generation of highly qualified specialists and researchers in the field of fashion design, capable of autonomous research, development, and innovation work in the university or business environment, contributing to the creation of new knowledge that enhances the interaction between the University and the business sector, and contributes to the competitiveness and sustainability of the national and European industry. 
The PhD course in Fashion Design has 180 ECTS and runs over 6 semesters. This course includes the development of an original thesis and the completion of a set of Curriculum Units aimed at research training.

Key learning outcomes


At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to understand systematically the contents and aptitude for research in the scientific field of fashion design;
2. Demonstrate analytical and synthesis skills;
3. Make an original contribution to the field of knowledge in fashion design;
4. Critically analyze, evaluate and synthesize new and complex ideas;
5. Understand the possible implications of research in their specialty in academic, professional, economic, technological, social or cultural areas.

Access to higher education


The completion of this PhD course allows for post-doctoral research activities.

Entry requirements


May apply for access to the course of study leading to a doctoral degree in Fashion Design:
a) Holders of a master's degree or legal equivalent;
b) Holders of a degree, possessing an academic or scientific curriculum, particularly relevant that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the legal competent scientific board of the university where they wish to be admitted;
c) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the legal competent scientific board.
For purposes of the preceding paragraphs, we consider areas suitable for application to the 3rd cycle of studies: Fashion Design, Product Design, Design, Design and Marketing, Textile Engineering and related areas deemed appropriate by the legal competent board.
