Description

The general objectives of the course are to provide Engineering training with a specialization in Telecommunications and Informatics, based on solid training in basic and engineering sciences, and integrating the fundamental areas of Electronics, Informatics and Information Systems.
Generically, it is intended to train licensees capable of understanding the functioning of telecommunication systems, at their different levels of conceptualization and implementation, such as mobile communication systems and networks, transmission and switching systems and networks, radio and broadcast systems, optical communication systems, communication networks data, Internet, telecommunications equipment, and network control and management systems. The graduates at the end of the training will be able to develop, implement, operate and maintain telecommunications systems, computer applications and distributed services, and to establish the security of a system against a security model.

Key learning outcomes

In the area of Telecommunications Engineering, the licensee must be able to:
- characterize the signals in the time and frequency domain, decompose and sample signals
- understand the mechanisms of propagation of electromagnetic waves and the operation of antennas
- understand the mechanisms of light propagation, the fundamentals of optical fibers and optical transmission
- understand the functioning of a digital transmission system (techniques of encoding, modulation, propagation of radio signals, and methods of accessing the medium)
- plan, implement and configure network interconnection solutions, fixed and mobile, Intranet and Internet
And in the Informatics area:
- develop algorithms, using complex data structures, including distributed algorithms
- write programs according to the imperative and object-oriented paradigms
- develop conceptual data models, design and interrogate databases
- use information systems modeling, analysis and design mechanisms

Access to higher education

The Degree in Telecommunications and Informatics Engineering is complemented in the training offer of UMinho by the continuity master called Master in Telecommunications and Informatics Engineering. Basic training also allows students to access 2nd cycle courses in Informatics, Electronics and Information Systems, or related areas.

Careers

According to his profile, a graduate in Telecommunications and Informatics Engineering will be able to perform the functions required by:
i) Telecommunications operators - in the design, operation and maintenance of telecommunications systems, infrastructures and services;
ii) Service Providers - in the design, operation and maintenance of services for telecommunications and computer networks;
iii) Content Providers - in the design, operation and maintenance of content (information) and computer applications to support access and availability of content;
iv) Companies with their own IT sector (public administration, schools, hospitals, banks, factories, carriers, etc.) - in the design, operation and maintenance of computer networks, network services and computer applications;
v) R&D companies - in the development of new communications systems.
Imagining the Internet as the greatest example of a telecommunications and computer system, we can easily see that today there is no sector that does not have a direct or indirect need for the professional services of these engineers, now and in the future. The course in its 18 years of existence has registered employability of practically 100% and that is the forecast for the future.
