Created in 1976, the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS) is one of the founding schools of the University of Minho. Since then, the ICS has taken active part in the launch of undergraduate, Masters and PhD degrees in the fields of Archaeology, Communication Sciences, Geography, History and Sociology. Present in both campi of the University, the Institute of Social Sciences has, based in the Gualtar Campus (Braga), the school Presidency and the Department of Communication Sciences, the Department of History and the Department of Sociology, as well as the correspondent teaching projects and the research units of these specific areas, CECS (Communication and Society Research Centre), CICS UMinho (Social Sciences Research Centre), and Lab2PT (Landscape, Heritage and Territory Laboratory).
The Department of Geography, its courses and the centre of camp research CEGOT (Centre of Studies on Geography and Spacial Planning), are based on the Azurém Campus, in Guimarães.
