Guimarães is a city with a remarkable historical past, associated with the foundation and the identity of Portuguese nationality. It is proudly known as the "Cradle of Portugal". Its historical centre was classified in 2001 as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Guimarães is the head of a municipality with roughly 158 thousand inhabitants.

Museums, monuments, popular festivities and much more contribute to the intense cultural dynamism of today's Guimarães. This was asserted, in 2012, when it became European Capital of Culture.
