Photography festival “Encontros da Imagem” celebrates 30th anniversary in five cities
9/15/2017 - 10/29/2017
Braga, Guimarães, Barcelos, Famalicão e Porto
The
international photography and visual arts festival "Encontros da Imagem”
takes place between September 15th and October 29th, featuring 49 exhibitions
in the cities of Braga, Guimarães, Barcelos, Famalicão and Porto. The official
opening happens on September 17th at 5 p.m., in the São Francisco de Real
Convent, in Braga. This session will feature most of the 55 artists from all
over the world, whose work is on display, and the heads of several
institutions. There will be exhibition presentations, as well as a performance
by the UMinho’s Department of Music Clarinet Ensemble.
UMinho is
the institution with the most venues (five) in the festival, showing the
university’s investment in culture and in educating new audiences.
Specifically, the Rectorate’s Medieval Hall gallery features the female
portrait exhibition of the “Promise Land” cycle, by North American artist Lydia
Panas, displaying the contradicting feelings of womanhood. This exhibition is
held in partnership with the UMinho’s Cultural Council. At the Nogueira da
Silva Museum, Jon Gorospe’s “Environment” series can be visited. The series won
the 4th Galicia Contemporary Photography Awards and focuses on how humankind
tries to hide waste, even though it still exists.
At the São
Francisco Convent, works by Sérgio Leitão, Tiny Domingos, Leonor Costa and
Mauro Ventura can be seen. Their work reinterprets four opus taken from the
festival’s archive, adding to them two performance, in a “game” of
unpredictability. This initiative is supported by the Archaeology Unit. Also in
Braga, the UMinho’s General Library in Gualtar unveils Ulla Deventer’s “I’ve
Never Been Big Sick”, the result of five years interacting with sex workers in
Belgium; at the same venue, Alice Smeets shows “The Ghetto Tarot”, a reinterpretation
of tarot cards in the ghetto. Another participating UMinho venue is the new
Guimarães Library, where an exhibition takes place in partnership with the
Documentation Services. The Finnish artist Erica Nyholm presents the “A Room of
One’s Own…” series, pertaining to places that are emotionally close to her,
such as her childhood home, her wedding night hotel and the lake where she
spent her summer family holidays.
About the
festival
The general
programme features exhibitions in 19 public and privately-owned venues,
including artistic residences, performances, projections, cinema cycles,
concerts, conferences, open calls, workshops, educational activities and a
photo-walk. Admittance is free. The “Encontros da Imagem” festival is
celebrating its 30th anniversary. It is a nearly unique reference of
photographic culture in Portugal and one of the oldest and most reputable
festivals of its kind in Europe. The festival is organised by the Encontros da
Imagem Associations, headed by Carlos Fontes and Manuel Santos. Its goal is to
intersect the gaze of classic and contemporary authors, to follow aesthetic and
formal developments of creative photography and to take risks on artistic
trends.
